IN A NUTSHELL
I'm Katie.
I'm a Pacific Northwest plant addict. I'm the mother of three crazy kids and one scruffy dog. I have a thing for Salvias and evergreen trees. And mountains.
WHY I LIKE GARDENING
I love being outside and I like dirt. Also, there's a quote that says "you can bury a lot of troubles in the garden." Totally true.
MY HISTORY (if you're interested)
When I was little, my grandpa would take me on walks through his garden. I remember him pinching off a mint leaf and having me smell it. He grew everything: prize orchids, vegetables, a plum tree, a staghorn fern. He and my grandma always had vegetables and flowers on their kitchen table during the summer, fresh from their own garden.
When I was twelve, my parents started a greenhouse called "The Root Seller". As kids, we could earn money by helping out. One time a lady came in and asked questions about what kind of tomatoes we had, and I was embarrassed that I didn't know how to answer. I found a plant book and read about them.
I got married. We rented a house in Tennessee while my husband was in medical school. I wished so badly for a yard to plant some tomatoes in. I realized my love of gardening and came to Utah with two little kids in tow so that I could take some gardening classes at CEU.
Finally, we moved to Seattle. We were renting again, so I started container gardening. Eventually, I just planted things where I wished with the expectation that I would dig them up and take them with me if we moved. We did move - and in the middle of the night, after the moving van was packed, I was in the backyard digging up my yellow austin rose ("Graham Thomas"). I was certain the neighbors thought I was burying a corpse and were going to call the cops on me.
Still in Seattle, I enrolled in my county's master gardening program. I've practiced and learned and grown (no pun intended) along the way.
